Training Programs

The backbone of our running club are our Saturday morning runs.

All of these informal  runs meet at Spring Road and the Prairie Path.  Next to the Gazebo.  Various groups meet  10 minutes before 6:00 am and 7:00 am and promptly head out on the Prairie Path.  Running groups tend to leave promptly on the hour.  Depending on runners, race schedules and the point they are at in their training, people just show up and join up.  It’s a casual none structured run but it really works.  You’ll catch on and fit in quickly.  Marathon training which starts in June and goes through October does have a 6:00 am start time and there’s always a predetermined distance with several pace group options.  If you plan on attending a Saturday morning Prairie Path run and would like to give us a heads up, please e-mail us at info@elmhurstrunningclub.com of your intentions and somebody will get back with you.  We want you there!

Marathon Training

Our program will start June 4th at the Gazebo at Spring Road and the Prairie Path.  We will have a quick but important meeting at 6:00 a.m. prior to the start of our first group run.  Marathon Training will be coached and led by Amy Pointon and Caroline Parisi two of our highly respected runners.  We are extremely excited to have them lead this program.   All runs after June 4th, will leave promptly at 6:00 a.m.  We suggest you get there 15 minutes before the start.  It is recommended that you be able to run at least 6 miles by June 4th.   We all need to be training right now.

Our #1 Goal is that everybody who participates in the marathon training program, no matter the pace, fits in and is adequately prepared for their race.

With all of our training programs, show up whenever you can and as often as you like.  Of course, the more times you’re able to take advantage of these, the more progress you will see in your running.

Tempo Runs

Tempo Runs start Thursday, June 9th at 6:00 pm at the Gazebo at Spring Road and the Prairie Path.  Larry Kravets will head up and lead the training during this piece of our summer training program.  Larry is one of a kind.  An excellent leader and great guy.  If anyone knows tempo runs, it would be him.  These workouts will sync with our Saturday morning marathon training runs.  Everyone is invited no matter what race you are running or not running in.  Remember, if you want to run faster in any race you need to train regularly at a pace that is a bit faster than your normal pace.

Summer Track Workouts

Summer Track Workouts start Tuesday, June 7th at 6:30 pm at the York High School Track.  Jim Akita will be leading and coaching our summer track workouts.  Jim is going to develop two separate track workouts.  Both programs (one being a little less intense) will complement tempo runs being held on Thursday evenings.   Jim is a talented coach with a unique ability to relate, listen, communicate, motivate and train runners of all abilities.  He is the Men’s Track and Cross Country Coach at Elmhurst College and has been their head coach for 9 years.  Jim is an Alumni of Elmhurst College where he also ran in both Cross Country & Track.   He is a very accomplished runner with a PR at the Chicago Marathon of 2:24.   In addition to our workouts, we are going to have a “Tip of the Week” where Jim will educate and advise us on different topics that are relevant to all runners.  Everyone is invited to participate no matter what your skill level is.  And remember, if you just want to come and run, the outer 2 lanes of the track will be available for you.

 Winter Track Workouts

Winter Track Workouts are held at the York High School Indoor Track during the months of January and February on Thursday mornings from 5:00 to 6:00 a.m.  Every Thursday there will be a specific track workout for the group.  For those who come just to run, the outer 2 lanes of the track are designated for them.  Don’t miss this opportunity to get out of the cold and run with your running buddies!
